Entries 10 - 6
Feb 25
Arcade games are full of pulse-pounding moments, but few match the adrenaline rush of facing off against a truly iconic boss. These larger-than-life foes are more than just characters on a screen, they’re the stuff of legend, etched into the memories of gamers everywhere. In this series, we’ve celebrated the best arcade bosses of all time. Today, we’re revealing number 10 to 6.
10. Singe the Dragon – Dragon’s Lair
This one is controversial, and we know it. So let us state our case. First and foremost, Dragon’s Lair’s animation is, to this day, absolutely incredible—and yes, we know that has little to do with the boss fight itself, but it’s true. As Princess Daphne coos at us to “slay the dragon,” we really, really want to slay that dragon. Now for the important bit: Dragon’s Lair is at its heart a quick-time event game, and the final boss battle is no different. Know where we’ve seen this same method used? Everywhere! Boss battles are inherently different from standard gameplay, and quick-time events have become a staple for adding variety to them. Where can we trace that all back to? That’s right: Dragon’s Lair. Plus, it gets extra points for being a dragon. Dragons are cool. You know it.
9. The Phoenix Mothership – Phoenix
Every story has a beginning, and for arcade bosses, the Phoenix Mothership is where it all started. This colossal enemy from 1980’s Phoenix is more than just a formidable foe; it’s a piece of history. Sure, its attack patterns are straightforward compared to modern bosses, but it gets a pass because this was the first. Facing the Mothership is like paying homage to your gaming ancestors. Without it, who knows where boss fights would be today?
8. Super Drunk – Bubble Bobble
Ladies and gentlemen,Super Drunk, the final boss of Bubble Bobble. This guy is bizarre even by arcade standards, but that’s part of his charm. His relentless attack pattern and unique mechanics make him a worthy challenge, but let’s be honest: can anyone actually name him off the top of their head? While Super Drunk loses points in the “iconic” category, he earns respect for being a weird, unexpected twist in an otherwise cutesy game.
7. Shredder – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game
Shredder may be a villain, but we kind of admire his dedication. This guy shows up again and again, always ready to throw down with the turtles and their endless supply of pizza. In the TMNT arcade game, Shredder doesn’t just attack—he clones himself, adding a layer of chaos to an already challenging fight. Picking the real Shredder out of a lineup of decoys is no easy task, especially when they’re all trying to disintegrate you with lasers. A true icon of the arcade era, in one of the finest titles of its time.
6. Sinistar – Sinistar
“Beware, I live!” Those three words are enough to send chills down the spine of any arcade veteran. Sinistar isn’t just a boss—he’s a predator, stalking you across the screen with terrifying speed and an appetite for destruction. The moment he’s fully constructed and lets out his signature roar, you know you’re in trouble. Sinistar’s relentless pursuit and booming voice make him a standout, even in an era full of memorable bosses. He doesn’t just appear in the game—he is the game.
