From Blackpool Pier to Arcade Club: saving Scarface’s Genuine Auto Repairs
Oct 26
You might not remember what it was called, but you probably remember where you played it.
At the end of a windswept pier. In the amusements at Butlin’s. On a family seaside holiday, when you were handed a few coins and immediately knew where you wanted to spend them.
An old shooting gallery has always had a special kind of pull. You know what we're talking about. You’d lean across the counter, pick up the rifle, take aim and work your way around the scene, trying to discover what each target did. Half the fun was watching someone else play, then having a go at the target they’d missed. It was a little show you could join in with.
Pan Amusements made that experience their speciality, and they've been building shooting galleries since 1979. Our new Scarface’s Genuine Auto Repairs, saved from Blackpool Pier, is full of the character they've been dishing up for over 40 years: gangsters in pinstripe suits, oil drums, battered tyres and a garage where very little honest work appears to be happening. Are the animatronics terrifying!? Absolutely! but its all part of the charm!
By the time we took it on, though, plenty of that little world had stopped working.
First came the challenge of dismantling and moving it, no mean feat believe you me! Then our technical team faced the painstaking job of finding out why so many elements no longer responded, repairing them and getting everything working together again. This isn't a fun task we asure you!
A lot of hard work, a little toil and a few hundred new parts later, she’s back up to speed. Our tech team deserve enormous credit for that, as they do with ALL the great work they do day in day out to keep the machines in this place working. Every character brought back to life and every target working again represents time, skill and persistence behind the scenes.
For someone visiting Arcade Club, the result might be a game they’ve never seen before. For someone else, it might bring back a rainy afternoon in Blackpool, a holiday with their grandparents or a friendly competition with their dad.
That’s why we wanted to save it. These games hold memories, and we’re delighted this one gets to help make a few more.
